Phan Dinh Kieu, the car driver, was driving Phan Dinh Quy, Quy's wife Le Thi Hanh, and their 15-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son, on Cam Lo - La Son Expressway in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue.
At around 10 a.m. when they were past the area that allows overtaking, Kieu overtook on the right side and hit a container truck moving in the same direction.
The car swirled after the collision, crashed by a second truck moving in the opposite direction during the process, and was thrown off the expressway.
The 9-year-old boy died on the spot. His mother and sister were rushed to hospital but succumbed to their injuries later. His father Quy and the driver Kieu escaped alive with scratches.

The car, a Ford Everest 7, was heavily smashed after the collisions as it lied seven meters below the expressway.
Two more trucks were caught in the accident, blocking traffic. Glass debris and oil spills were found in 30-meter radius.
Around 10 meters of the expressway fence were damaged.

Traffic police had to direct vehicles to turn onto National Highway 1A and a provincial road.
Hoang Hai Minh, vice chairman of Thua Thien-Hue, joined forces to inspect the site.
He later visited the victims' family and supported them with VND15 million (US$611.50).

The 98.3-km Cam Lo - La Son Expressway opened to traffic on Dec. 31, 2022 to connect Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue Provinces.
It is one of five expressways in Vietnam that have two lanes and are 12 meters wide on most of their lengths. Some of their parts which have four lanes and are 23 meters wide allow overtaking.
There are plans to widen all these expressways to four lanes after 2030.
Cam Lo - La Son Expressway has seen several accidents since opening. Most recently on Dec. 18, 2023, two container trucks collided heads-on and caught fire, leaving one driver dead and two other people severely injured.
