The accident took place at around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday when Phuong Thanh Tung, 36, was driving the 40-seat bus owned by Quynh Huong company in Hoa Vang District on the expressway connecting Thua Thien Hue and Da Nang City.

The bus reportedly hit an embankment and plunged off the cliff and into an abyss 10 m below.

Two passengers were killed on the spot. The injured were taken to a Da Nang hospital.

It was raining heavily at the time of the accident, and there were not many vehicles on the road.

The La Son - Tuy Loan Expressway which runs 77.5 km, has two lanes spanning 12 m in width and allows vehicles to travel at a maximum of 80 kph.

Drivers say the fact that the expressway winds its way through mountainous areas without concrete medians or enough lights poses a serious threat of accidents.

A police report said the accident was caused by rain and fog reducing visibility and the driver being sleepy.
