New terminals at HCMC's Tan Son Nhat Airport and Dong Nai’s Long Thanh Airport, worth over VND45 trillion ($1.89 billion) in total, are expected to begin construction on Aug. 31.

The Airports Corporation of Vietnam said on Wednesday the Long Thanh Airport terminal would cost VND35 trillion, span 150 ha, and include four floors with space for 40 plane gates. It is expected to be completed and open in 2026.

The terminal, considered to be the "heart" of the airport itself, has a lotus-themed design and will be equipped with artificial waterfalls and gardens.

Besides the terminal, the new Long Thanh Airport would also see a runway spanning 4,000 m and other infrastructure to be built by the same date.

The Long Thanh Airport is planned to have a capacity of transporting 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of goods a year, replacing Tan Son Nhat which is less than 50 km away as Vietnam's largest airport.

Meanwhile, the T3 terminal of Tan Son Nhat Airport will soon undergo the construction of its high-rise parking lot, a viaduct system and other infrastructures and services on Saturday. The terminal will cost VND10.99 trillion and is expected to be built over 20 months, before opening in the second quarter of 2025.

The terminal will have five floors including one underground. The total floor area would be around 112,500 m2. Once it is completed, the terminal would be for domestic use with a capacity of 20 million passengers a year.
