A man who drove a Mercedes car at 210 kph on a new Mekong Delta expressway and made a TikTok video of it has been fined VND22 million (US$900).

The 37-year-old man who lives in the delta's An Giang Province was fined for speeding but also driving with an expired license, the police said Friday.

The incident took place on the night of Dec. 31 when he was driving the car on the newly opened My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway between Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City.

A friend sitting next to him filmed it, and later posted that video on TikTok.

The man could be seen driving at 210 kph in some places, while the maximum speed allowed on the expressway is 90.

He told the police he had just bought the car and wanted to test its speed.

The video was to "show off to friends."

The 23-km stretch between My Thuan and Can Tho opened to traffic in December along with My Thuan 2 Bridge, which connects it with the existing Trung Luong – My Thuan Expressway.

Thanks to the completion of the expressway, it now takes only around two hours to travel between the two biggest cities in southern Vietnam, down from the earlier four.
