Chu Van An Street is set to be widened at a cost of VND1.067 trillion (US$44 million), the largest amount HCMC has ever spent on expanding a road.

A 600-m section of the street in Binh Thanh District will go from 5-6 m to 23 m, with the work carried out from now through 2026.

Explaining the high cost, the district administration said since the street has a high population density, the compensation payment for acquiring lands has been high.

It will affect 176 families, and the total compensation payment is estimated at VND982 billion.

"The road lies in a developed urban area and the compensation price is close to the market price," a Binh Thanh People’s Committee spokesperson said.

Chu Van An Street is nearly two kilometers long and an arterial traffic route in Binh Thanh that connects with many other major roads such as Dinh Bo Linh, Phan Chu Trinh, No Trang Long, and Phan Van Tri.

The 600-m section from Binh Hoa Intersection to Phan Chu Trinh Street has for long been a bottleneck, causing frequent congestion and affecting people's daily commute and business activities.
