Thousands of people flocked to an artificial beach in which waves reach four meters high in Dong Nai Province on Sunday to escape the torrid weather.

Nguyen Vu Tuong Vy is dressed as mermaid to play in the water with children. A part-time employee of the park, Vy spends 1.5 hours every day during the holidays as a mermaid.

"Although the weather is quite hot, seeing the children happy and surrounding me is enjoyable," the 21-year-old, who is still in college, says.

Visiting her children and grandchildren from the central Nghe An Province for the holidays, Luong Thi Loan takes photos with her grandchildren in the play area.

"There are many interesting games here that help relieve the heat," she says.

Yen Nhi, 24, of neighboring Binh Duong Province, visited the Son Tien tourist area for the first time on Sunday.

"There are more interesting games here than in other parks," she says.

A 700-meter-long artificial canal flowing around the water park was also filled with people.

The water park on National Highway 51, around 30 km from HCMC, spreads over 25 hectares and opened two years ago.

Tickets cost VND450,000 (US$17.75) for adults and VND250,000 for children.
