Police fined a truck driver VND17 million (US$690) and revoked his license for six months on Tuesday after he was captured driving on the wrong side of Nghi Son – Dien Chau Expressway.

Driver Phan Van Son, 49, told police that around 6 a.m. on Feb. 20, he drove a truck carrying building materials for a road in Dien Chau District of the central province of Nghe An.

As he was not familiar with traffic in the area, he had accidentally entered Nghi Son – Dien Chau Expressway, which links the two provinces of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa.

When he was aware of the situation, he turned the truck around to exit the expressway.

As captured on a dash cam of another car, Son’s truck moved in the wrong direction of the expressway for more than 500 m.

Son also drove the vehicle at high speed and kept changing lanes, while signaling for others to give way for him.

At the time the incident took place, there was thick fog covering the expressway, posing dangers for other drivers.

Nghi Son – Dien Chau stretches 50 km long and has four lanes. It has no emergency lanes and just one emergency stop. It was put into use last October, allowing vehicles to move at a maximum speed of 80 kph.
