Some 1,400 engineers and workers, 400 vehicles and equipment have been mobilized to ensure construction of the third terminal at HCMC's Tan Son Nhat airport is completed next year.

Le Khac Hong, head of the Terminal 3 (T3) construction management team, said Friday that the work, which began in 2022, has moved to major components such as the passenger terminal, parking area and non-aviation service center.

The terminal is expected to be basically completed in May this year and the parking area three months later, he said.

Being built at a cost of VND11 trillion (US$444 million) by the state-owned Airports Corporation of Vietnam, T3 will be the largest domestic terminal in the country with a capacity of 20 million passengers a year.

"To ensure the work remain on schedule, the construction contractors have dispatched 1,400 workers and engineers, 16 tower cranes, 350 vehicles, and equipment to the construction site," Hong said.

The progress is checked every 15 days, and any delays are addressed by the contractors with solutions to catch up with the deadlines.

"The construction progress is well controlled and the entire project is on track for completion by mid-2025."

The terminal was approved by the government in 2020 to increase the airport's capacity to 50 million passengers annually together with the existing T1 and T2 terminals.

It comprises three main components: the passenger terminal, a multi-story parking and non-aviation service building and overpasses. The 112,500 m2 terminal has one basement and four floors.

The contractor is a joint venture between the Hanoi Construction Corporation, Construction Corporation No.1, the Ministry of National Defense’s 319 Corporation, the army’s Truong Son Construction, Ricons Construction Investment, and Luu Nguyen Construction.

The terminal’s architecture is inspired by the traditional ao dai, a cultural symbol of Vietnam.

It will have 90 check-in counters, 20 automatic baggage drop counters, 42 check-in kiosks, 27 boarding gates, six baggage handling islands, and 10 baggage belts.

The parking and non-aviation service building, with two basements and four floors, will spread over 130,000 m2.

The four-kilometer Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road is being built outside at a cost of VND4.8 trillion. It is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

In addition to connecting to the new terminal, it also will offer a new route to the airport to ease traffic on Truong Son Street and generally reduce congestion in the area.
