Rare Indian peafowl found on Saigon balcony

The Ho Chi Minh City forest protection department received the peafowl (Pavo cristatus) on Wednesday and brought it to a rescue shelter. It was the first time the department brought a member of the species under their care.

Four days prior, the peafowl was found on the third-floor balcony of a house in Thu Duc City. The owner of the house tried to shoo the bird away, but the bird did not respond, so he brought it into the house. The next day, the bird was brought to a wild animal rescue center in Cu Chi.

Nguyen Cong Bang, head of the Cu Chi wild animal rescue center, said the bird is not native and not found in Vietnam, so after the bird gets healthy, the unit will hand over the bird to either the zoo or a conservation center.

Mai Khac Trung Truc, director of the Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden, said the zoo had three white Indian peafowls and usually fed them with cereal, insects and fruit.
