A high-ranking monk in Dong Nai Province has been suspended from his position for lascivious online images of his that have "affected the reputation of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha."

The suspension of Tu Duc Pagoda's abbot, Thich Nhuan Nghi (birth name Le Trung Hai), was issued by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Dong Nai management committee on Monday.

Nghi has also suspended from his position as deputy head of the management committee of the southern province.

He was additionally removed from his post as head of the Sangha’s Vinh Vuu District Buddhist education committee for the 2021-2026 term.

The Sangha’s Dong Nai management committee said Nghi behaved inappropriately during his training and the subsequent carrying-out of his duties, both of which "caused discord at the pagoda and affected the reputation of the Sangha on multiple levels."

The Sangha’s Vinh Cuu District standing management committee has been delegated to manage Nghi’s affairs and properties, as well as oversee operations and undertake managerial tasks at Tu Duc Pagoda, until the case comes to a conclusion.

Images that were believed to be of Nghi engaging in inappropriate activities with a woman have been circulating on social media recently.

There are around 4.6 million Buddhism followers in Vietnam.
