The Hanoi Infrastructure Management Center said the capital’s public lighting system had managed to reduce 62,271 kWh of power a day thanks to power-saving measures, local media reported.
The center has sent documents to public lighting management units regarding the adjustments of the public lighting system’s timing and operation.
It also requested the public lighting monitoring and control center to flexibly operate the lighting system depending on weather conditions.
During summertime, the public lighting system turns on lights at 6:30 p.m. and turns them off at 5 a.m. the next day. However, the lights will now be turned on 30 minutes later than usual, and turned off 30 minutes sooner.
For streetlights in alleys and suburban areas, one-third will be turned off at dusk, and another third from 11 p.m.
For roads with four lanes of lights, such as Vo Chi Cong, Hoang Sa-Truong Sa or the Thang Long Avenue, half of the lights would be turned off at dusk, and the lights in the middle lane turned off from 11 p.m.
For lights in parks and gardens, only half will be turned on at most, and all lights will be turned off from 11 p.m.
Hanoi’s public lighting system has a capacity of 28,740 kW. Daily usage of the system normally reaches 292,194 kwh during winter and 244,293 kWh during summer.
The Hanoi Infrastructure Management Center has also proposed to the municipal Department of Construction to gradually replace traditional lights with LED lights in public lighting to cut energy usage by 30-50%.
