A teenager in the southern Dong Nai Province has been blinded in one eye after being injected with fillers at an unlicensed beauty clinic.

The 17-year-old girl was brought to Cho Ray Hospital in HCMC bordering Dong Nai on Jan. 9 with loss of vision in the left eye, a collapsed eyelid, bruises, and hemorrhaging, Dr Nguyen Xuan Thao of the ophthalmology department said Wednesday.

Tests found an artery in her eye blocked and the uveal tract inflamed.

The filler had been injected 24 hours earlier.

After eight days of treatment her eyes have begun to open more though she has not regained her vision.

The girl said she had gone to Spa Yuri Beauty Center in Dong Nai's Tan Phu District intending to get fillers injected in her lips and cheeks. But employees there recommended that she should get some in the nose as well.

Following the shot, she felt nauseous and dizzy, and was not unable to see clearly.

Employees at the parlor gave her some medicine, but her condition did not improve. She was later taken to the Cho Ray Hospital.

Police in Tan Phu District said the facility is only licensed to cut and wash hair, the employees who gave her the shots are not licensed to do so and the fillers they used lacked clear origins.

Fillers are increasingly used for cosmetic purposes to make facial features look fuller. Many people opt for them since as they provide instant results and lasting effects without the need for surgeries.

However, fillers should only be handled by doctors specializing in dermatology and cosmetic procedures, according to the Ministry of Health.
