A man in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong has given a Sunda pangolin to authorities after finding it wandering around in his garden.

Nguyen Van Chinh in Da Teh District went to the district's ranger station last Saturday to hand over the pangolin, which had gotten lost and walked into his house's garden the night before.

Chinh said he tracked down the pangolin after his dog found it and started barking at it.

Rangers then identified the pangolin as a Sunda pangolin, also known as the Malayan or Javan pangolin, and transferred it to Cat Tien National Park in Dong Nai Province, which borders Ho Chi Minh City.

The Sunda pangolin is listed as a critically endangered animal.

Pangolins are the world's most heavily trafficked mammal despite bans.

It is hunted in Vietnam and its habitat for meat and the alleged medicinal properties of its scales.
