The Binh Hung wastewater treatment plant in HCMC's Binh Chanh District has been expanded by almost half and can now treat domestic wastewater discharged by two million people.

Its capacity has been increased to 469,000 cubic meters per 24 hours from the earlier 328,000 cu.m, Luong Minh Phuc, director of the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Board of HCMC, said Thursday.

It will collect and treat wastewater discharged by people living in an area of 2,100 hectares along the Tau Hu – Ben Nghe – Doi – Te canal system in the six districts of 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, and 11.

The expansion is part of a project to improve the water quality in the canal system undertaken at a cost of VND11.3 trillion (US$460 million) from Japanese official development assistance loans and Vietnamese government funds.

Other components of the project include renovation of 10.8 km of the canal system by dredging, building embankments, upgrading the drainage system, expanding a pumping station in District 8, and constructing new sewers.

The works are expected to be completed this year.

HCMC has two other major operational wastewater treatment plants, Tham Luong - Ben Cat in District 12 with a capacity of 131,000 cu.m and Binh Hung Hoa in Binh Tan District (30,000 cu.m) besides several small ones.

Construction of the 480,000 cu.m Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe plant in Thu Duc City is currently underway. Once completed, it will replace Binh Hung as the city’s largest.
