The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will seek to set up sports clubs at schools to help all students play one or more sport "skillfully."

Nguyen Van Hieu, the department"s director, said Monday this is one of the goals in the city's draft education development strategy for until 2030.

He said students are considered skillful in playing a sport when they could play it confidently and practice regularly.

A report by the department said students are interested in sports like martial arts, football, basketball, and badminton.

Some 90% of schools have sports clubs and more than 72% of students have joined them.

But Hieu said at many schools they barely function.

Duong Tri Dung, the department's deputy director, said each school must have three or more sports clubs for their students and some meet this requirement.

Students joining those clubs could play the sports they register together and compete against each other after or before their classes every day or during the weekend.

In 2023-24 there are around 1.7 million students at 2,700 schools in HCMC, including more than 1.2 million students from first to 12th grades at 900 public schools.
