A five-year-old girl in northern Vietnam has been hospitalized with severe injuries, including facial, after being mauled by a stray dog just outside her home.

The tragic incident occurred at around 8:50 p.m. on Wednesday in Bac Quang District, Ha Giang Province, when the girl, who was walking alone, was attacked by the medium-sized dog. It reportedly leaped on her and began biting viciously.

It took nearly a minute for passers-by to intervene and subdue the dog and rescue the child.

Trinh Quynh Dung, the girl's mother, said her daughter had been on her way to a friend's house 50 meters away from home when the attack took place.

"I was at home when I got the news. She has injuries on her face, arms, and shoulders, and scratches all over her body."

After preliminary treatment at the district hospital, the child was transferred to the Vietnam National Hospital of Pediatrics in Hanoi.

She has been vaccinated against rabies and is reportedly in stable condition.

Viet Quang District authorities revealed that the dog had previously attacked three other individuals, including two children.

Following the latest attack, locals captured and put down the animal.

Earlier this month an unmuzzled rabid dog entered Duc Yen Primary and Secondary School in Quang Ninh Province during the lunch break, and bit 14 students and teachers.

All were advised to receive medical treatment immediately.
