I am not satisfied with my 29-year-old boyfriend’s nearly $1,200 salary

My boyfriend, 29, said he has worked very hard to reach his current salary of VND30 million (US$1,181) when I expressed my hope that he would strive to increase his income to VND40-45 million.

I am 27 years old and earn around VND20 million. My boyfriend does not yet own a house or a car, but he has managed to save around VND1 billion. He also bears the responsibility of taking care of his father, as he lost his mother at a young age. Given our current financial situation, it is challenging for us to make long-term plans for the future.

At present, he is investing in further education, improving his skills, and developing an agricultural garden in his hometown. He also shared that if I want him to earn a higher salary, the only viable option would be for him to return to Japan, where his former boss offers him good benefits and is ready to welcome him back. However, this would mean that we would have to break up.

I am feeling quite confused. How can I encourage my boyfriend to stay in Vietnam and work towards increasing his income without making him feel pressured?
