Kim Jae Joong, a well-known South Korean idol singer with two decades of fame across Asia, shared that his family supports him and does not pressure him to marry at the age of 38.

On Sept. 14, Kim held his "Flower Garden" concert in Ho Chi Minh City to promote his new album, drawing thousands of fans. He expressed his excitement about returning to Vietnam after his last fan meeting in April. "I’m very impressed by the enthusiasm of my Vietnamese fans, and I truly appreciate all the love and support," he said.

During a press conference before the event, Kim reflected on his career and mentioned that his family has been his motivation, helping him face life’s challenges.

Born Han Jae Jun, Kim was adopted by the Kim family at the age of three after his biological parents divorced due to financial difficulties. Raised alongside eight older sisters, he only learned about his adoption at the age of 20.

Kim proudly shared that his family has expanded, with all his sisters now married and having children. "Because our family is so big, my parents haven’t pressured me to marry. But I do feel guilty that I haven’t been able to settle down yet," he added.

During the two-hour concert, Kim captivated the audience with many of his hits, including "Nobody Like You," "Good News," "Dream Party," and "I Am U." He shared that although he had performed "Summer J" on many stages, none matched the vibrant atmosphere in Vietnam.

As he performed "I’ll Protect You," fans raised banners and LED light sticks while singing along. Attendees noted that this was a special gift from his fan club to celebrate his 20th anniversary in the industry. He also performed several new songs from his latest album.

Kim was touched by the fans’ efforts, saying, "I didn’t expect you to sing in Korean so well," and added in Vietnamese, "Thank you very much." At the end of the concert, he handed out flowers and received gifts from fans, including stuffed animals and star-shaped lanterns for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

For many fans, Kim’s talent and approachable nature have kept him popular throughout his two decades in the industry. Hai Yen, 35, a long-time fan, said, "His powerful voice, energetic dance moves, and charming personality are why he still has such a large fan base."

Kim also expressed his admiration for Vietnamese culture, noting that Vietnamese dishes, especially pho, are well-known in South Korea. He fondly recalled enjoying a bowl of pho from a small street vendor that left a lasting impression on him.

He added that he could eat pho anytime and considers it a perfect hangover remedy. While he has tried to cook pho himself, he admitted he couldn’t replicate the authentic flavor found in Vietnam. After the concert, he hoped to relax, explore Ho Chi Minh City’s night markets, and enjoy the city’s atmosphere.

Kim, 38, grew up in a poor family in South Korea. During hard times, he sold gum at subway stations, delivered newspapers, and even sold his blood to make ends meet.

He debuted as a member of DBSK in 2004. The group achieved numerous accomplishments, including being honored as the best Korean boy band of the first decade of the 21st century.

After DBSK disbanded in 2010, he formed the group JYJ with two other former members, Kim Jun Su and Park Yoo Chun, before pursuing a solo music career, as well as branching into business and fashion.

South Korean media estimated in 2018 that Kim’s assets were worth over US$100 million, making him one of the wealthiest celebrities in the country.
