Vietnam's Immigration Department, under the Ministry of Public Security, announced Friday that it had coordinated with relevant agencies to hand Bass over to U.S. law enforcement for further action.
Earlier, on March 19, the department received information that Bass, classified as a dangerous criminal wanted by U.S. authorities for murder, had entered Vietnam.
The department immediately directed specialized units to verify and locate the suspect. Investigators reviewed surveillance footage of thousands of arriving passengers, ultimately discovering Bass had traveled into Hanoi’s inner city. Another team identified a hotel in Hoan Kiem District as his probable location.
At 11:45 p.m. the same day, officers spotted a man resembling Bass dining at a restaurant in central Hoan Kiem.
He later moved to a hotel in Hang Bac Ward, where undercover officers monitored him overnight, awaiting the right moment to make an arrest.
"We couldn’t arrest him immediately because the area was crowded with locals and foreign tourists. More importantly, the suspect was considered dangerous, had a history of violent crime, illegal weapon possession, and resistance to law enforcement," said a representative from the Immigration Department.
On the morning of March 20, after observing signs that Bass was preparing to leave, officers received approval for the arrest operation.
At around 10 a.m., a task force from the Immigration Department and other units successfully apprehended Bass at the hotel.
