Le Van Se, 96, and his wife, Nguyen Thi Loi, 88, reside in Hoi An Ancient Town, central Quang Nam Province. The couple fell in love in their 30s and got married 10 years later, before the outbreak of war sent Se to the army. Taken prisoner during a skirmish, Se finally returned home in 1954 to reunite with his anxious, but patient partner. |
The couple and their five children live in Tra Que Village, famed for supplying the region with fresh vegetables. |
The couple managed to overcome some of life’s toughest challenges to grow old together in loving care and happiness. |
"I met them nearly 10 years ago. At the time, Se was still in good health. Every afternoon, he would gather water for irrigation while Loi picked vegetables, teasing and making fun of each other," Phuoc said. |
Increasing numbers of tourists to Hoi An are making a detour to visit the exemplary couple as images of their undying affection spread online. |
When Loi slipped down the stairs and broke her leg, Se and their children took turns to take care of her. |
Due to old age, however, Loi passed away shortly after at 88. |
Having losing his soulmate, sad and miserable Se saw his own health decline, though in constant conversation with her spirit. |
"Not many people experience such great love in their lifetime," Phuoc noted. |
