The ASEAN Traditional Costume Exhibition held in Hanoi celebrates the 15th anniversary of the ASEAN Community and Vietnam’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2020.

Organized by the embassies of ASEAN countries in Hanoi and Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the exhibition is held at the Vietnam National Museum of History on Trang Tien Street from October 21-28 .

Among the traditional attires on display are the Chakkri, Boromphiman and Siwalai from Thailand, Nonya Kebaya from Singapore, Kerawang Gayo Lues from Indonesia, and their counterparts from Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The exhibition will serve to strengthen mutual understanding among peoples in the region and contribute to expanding economic, investment and tourism cooperation, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ta Quang Dong said at the opening ceremony.

He said ASEAN countries had cooperated in opening the exhibition despite difficulties posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

ASEAN countries are culturally diverse, so their traditional outfits are varied, based on their location, ethnicity, climate and regional characteristics.

Organizers noted that although Western costumes are more used in daily life for their convenience, traditional costumes remain preferred for important events and festivities.
