Three straight wins for Viettel FC in the group stage of the AFC Cup in June took Vietnam into the top 10 in the AFC club football rankings.

With the three victories, Viettel advanced to the knockout round of the tournament while earning 5.14 points for Vietnam in the rankings.

With HAGL earlier garnering five points, Vietnam have 10.14 in 2022.

Vietnam have scored 26.892 over the last four seasons to surpass Jordan (24.807), Thailand (22.410) and Tajikistan (22.195) and enter the top 10.

The contributors are Hanoi FC (14.28 points), Viettel (11.14), Becamex Binh Duong (7.22) and HAGL (5).

The nine countries above Vietnam in the AFC club ranking are Malaysia, UAE, Qatar, Hong Kong, Iran, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. Malaysia are first in the Southeast Asian region with 27.875 points.

If Viettel go further in the AFC Cup and Malaysia’s Johor Darul Ta'zim fail to do so in the knockout round of the AFC Champions League (ACL), Vietnam will go past Malaysia to ninth position.

The AFC club ranking at the end of the 2022 season will be the basis for allocating slots to countries in 2024-2025 continental tournaments.

If Vietnam can surpass Malaysia, they will have two direct slots in the AFC Champions League group stage and two in the qualifiers.

Vietnamese clubs will no longer have to play the AFC Cup, which is a tier lower than the ACL.

Viettel will play their first knockout match against Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur City on August 10.
