Vietnam thrashed Timor Leste 7-1 and climbed to the top of group B in the 2022 AFF Futsal Championship on Tuesday.

A big win against Timor Leste was expected, but it took Vietnam until the last minutes to complete their target. The team opened the scoreboard after just 48 seconds thanks to an effort of Nguyen Thinh Phat, but then continuously squandered their chances and had to pay the price. In the 17th minute, Pham Duc Hoa let Andre Vong steal the ball and face goalkeeper Ho Van Y, then pass to Cesario who put it in the empty net.

The goal seemed to make Vietnam wake up. In the remaining three minutes of the first half, Duc Hoa redeemed himself with two assists. In the 19th minute, he set up Thai Huy to shoot from a long distance to beat the Timor Leste goalkeeper Jose Lopes. A minute later, Duc Hoa sprinted to the right, then passed to Thinh Phat who tapped it in.

Timor Leste pushed the team higher in the second half but failed to score and even conceded four more. In just one minute, Nguyen Van Hieu and Le Quoc Nam scored to help Vietnam lead 5-1.

There were not as many good opportunities as in the first half, but Vietnam were more effective with their finishing in the second half. In the 30th minute, Nguyen Minh Tri received the ball and chipped it over the head of keeper Lopes.

In the 38th minute, Duc Hoa assisted another goal, this time for Van Hieu to secure the 7-1 win.

In the last game of group B, Vietnam will face Australia on Wednesday and only need a draw to advance to the semifinals.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals. The top three teams of the tournament will qualify for 2022 Futsal Asian Cup.
