Southeast Asia and China need to bolster trade and investment cooperation more than ever, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has said.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 20th China-ASEAN Expo and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Nanning, China, on Sunday, he said economic cooperation between the two sides had seen an unimaginable leap over the last 20 years.

Their trade increased from US$78.2 billion in 2003 to $975.6 billion in 2022, making them each other's largest trade partners and among the most important investment partners.

Amid a slow global economic recovery and heightened demand for cooperation, they need to bolster trade and investment cooperation more than ever, Chinh said.

He wanted the trade to develop in a balanced and sustainable way and ASEAN to become China's first $1-trillion trade partner.

They need to keep their markets open, sign free trade agreements and develop links for materials, production and consumption, he said.

Vietnam wants negotiations completed for the 3.0 version of the ASEAN-China free trade agreement, and traffic connectivity infrastructure upgraded, he said.

He called for expanding the trial of smart border gate models to better meet trade, investment, cultural, and tourism demands of both businesses and peoples.

He said ASEAN and China need to take their goods to markets like Europe and Central Asia.

Chinh also hoped that China and ASEAN would strengthen people-to-people exchanges, cultural, tourism and aviation cooperation, bringing tourism cooperation to pre-Covid levels, and expand tourism through the use of cars and electric vehicles.

They should cooperate in emerging fields and create new drivers for growth, like the green and digital economies, he added.

Chinese premier Li Qiang said China and ASEAN have become models for success in the Asia-Pacific.

For the last three years they have been each other's largest trade partners, while their two-way investments are over $350 billion.

To bolster cooperation, they have to maintain frequent dialogues and exchanges and expand cultural, tourism and training cooperation, among others, he said.

Chinh and his delegation traveled to Nanning for the expos on September 16 and 17.
