Taiwanese actress Ning Chang loses $1.2M after stock markets crash triggered by tariffs

Her management said in a statement: "Stock investment is a personal matter for Chang. The company does not intervene. Thank you for your concern."

Back in February 2022, Chang invested NT$60.16 million to acquire 256 lots of privately issued shares in pharmaceutical company Yao Hua. The move initially paid off, netting her around NT$160 million in profits and earning her the nickname "stock goddess" from online fans.

At a film launch event last month, Chang laughed off the nickname, saying: "That is a big misunderstanding. Do not believe everything you see online." She added that her investment in Yao Hua was driven by its focus on disease research, which she hoped could benefit more people.

However, as global markets took a hit due to U.S.'s reciprocal tariffs, Yao Hua’s stock dropped, erasing about NT$39 million from Chang’s portfolio, according to Sinchew.

Chang, 42, is a well-known actress in Taiwan and mainland China, with notable roles in television series such as "The Empress of China" and "Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace."

Chang is also known for her strong academic background. Her father is a professor, her mother a well-known author and lecturer at Taiwan’s National University of the Arts, and she herself holds a doctorate in law from National Taipei University. Local media have referred to her as "Taiwan’s most beautiful intellectual."
