Specifically, citizens aged 21 to 59 will receive S$600 worth of vouchers while those over 60 will get S$800, CNA reported.
These cash vouchers will benefit about 3 million citizens, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said while announcing the city-state’s 2025 national budget on Tuesday.
They will be distributed in July and expire on Dec. 31, 2026, with seniors given priority to claim them first.
Half of them can be used at participating supermarkets while the remainder can be spent at participating heartland merchants and hawkers, similar to the Community Development Council (CDC) voucher scheme, according to Mothership.
The cash vouchers, part of the SG60 package to celebrate Singapore’s 60th anniversary, are estimated to cost the government S$2.02 billion.
The package also introduces a 60% rebate on personal income tax for income earned in 2024.
This will have a cap of S$200 to ensure it primarily supports middle-income workers, Wong noted.
Some other benefits from the package include special gifts for babies born this year, rental support of S$600 per stall for hawker center and market stallholders, and credits that can be used for eligible sports, arts and heritage activities.
Wong emphasized that Singaporeans from all generations and backgrounds have been instrumental in bringing the city-state to its 60th anniversary and building a stronger Singaporean identity based on common experiences, memories, and collective aspirations.
"We look out for one another, cheer each other on, and help our fellow citizens succeed together," he said, as quoted by The Straits Times.
"Our solidarity has seen us through many challenges, including our fight against Covid-19. We must continue to help our fellow citizens and ensure that we move forward together, as a people and a nation."
