Chairwoman of property developer Van Thinh Phat Truong My Lan said she gave a former acting CEO of Saigon Commercial Bank bonuses and shares “for contributing to SCB."

At her trial in HCMC Wednesday Lan said she did give Truong Khanh Hoang, 38, shares and money but did not remember the exact amount.

Hoang has admitted to receiving over VND100 billion (US$4.05 billion).

She said when SCB was listed on the stock market, she gave her personal shares to every SCB employee including security guards and janitors and not just Hoang.

"The shares had belonged to my friends. They went abroad and so I bought the shares [and then gave them away]. Hoang held a high position, and so he received more shares [than other employees]."

Hoang earlier told the court that he had been paid salaries of VND130-500 million a month and bonuses of VND5 billion while working for SCB.

He also received 10 million SCB shares, then worth VND100 billion, from Lan in July 2022.

Asked why he was given those shares, he said: "Lan wanted to reward me for my contributions to SCB. At the time Lan said SCB was about to be sold to foreign [investors] and so she gave me [those shares]."

He offered to return the shares to compensate for the losses he had caused the bank.

Hoang was SCB’s acting CEO from May 2021 to August 2022 and deputy CEO since September 2019.

He said he had submitted his resignation due to enormous stress in June 2022, but it was only accepted in August.

Hoang is on trial for embezzlement for allegedly helping Lan appropriate VND285 trillion from SCB under the guise of loans.

Prosecutors said he participated in many high-level meetings with other executives to approve her loans.

Between 2012 and 2022, SCB gave Lan over 2,500 loans worth over VND1 quadrillion ($44 billion), equivalent to 93% of its entire credit portfolio.

She is charged with misappropriating VND304 trillion ($12.31 billion) and causing the lender losses of VND498 trillion.

The trial began on March 5 and is scheduled to go on until April 29.
