Former German vice chancellor on Vietravel Airlines board

Former German Vice Chancellor Philipp Rösler was elected as an independent member of the Board of Directors of Vietravel Airlines on Monday.

His role will be to help facilitate the carrier’s international partner network development.

As a board member till 2027, Philipp Rösler will advise Vietravel Airlines on expanding international cooperation, especially with investors and partners in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

Philipp Rösler was born in 1973 in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang. He was adopted and raised in Germany. He entered politics after serving in the army as a military doctor.

In 2009, he became German Minister of Health. Two years later, he became German Minister of Economics and Technology, and Vice Chancellor.

Since leaving politics in 2014, he has held important positions at Siemens, Deutsche Bank and Lufthansa.

Currently, he is chairman of the International Advisory Board of VinaCapital Ventures, a venture capital fund in the technology sector at investment management firm VinaCapital.

At the end of last year, Vietravel Group, the largest shareholder in tourism firm Vietravel (VTR), transferred 1.78 million VTR shares, equivalent to 10.3% of capital, to VinaCapital.

The general meeting of shareholders of Vietravel Airlines on Monday also authorized the airline’s Board of Directors to implement a plan to issue private shares to increase charter capital to VND2 trillion (US$83.3 million) from VND1.3 trillion.

Vietravel Airlines is operating only four aircraft with a limited flight network, and the company is looking for investors to obtain more resources.
