With 144 billionaires having attended the school, Harvard tops the list of five U.S. universities with the most billionaire alumni, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is notably absent.

These institutions have produced some of the world’s richest individuals like Tesla CEO Elon Musk and legendary investor Warren Buffett, Fortune magazine reported, citing a new study by course aggregation firm Class Central.

Dhawal Shah, the company’s founder and CEO, said the study shows a strong link between attending prestigious universities and building wealth as students at these institutions can learn from top professors and are surrounded by entrepreneurial peers similar to them.

"The availability of knowledgeable mentors, resources, insider knowledge and exclusive networks certainly increases the probability of extreme financial gain," he noted.

Although MIT has 38 billionaire alumni, it ranks behind Harvard, Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of California, and Columbia University, and therefore falls just short of the top five.
