Both Vietnam and the Philippines have had crushing victories in their first games at SEA Games 31 football. While Vietnam put three past Indonesia, the Philippines had no trouble winning 4-0 against Timor Leste.

In SEA Games football history, Vietnam haven't lost to the Philippines in six encounters (one draw and five wins).

Another win would get Vietnam closer to the semifinals, as their remaining opponents, Myanmar and Timor Leste are considered the weakest in group A.
