The winning goal of Huynh Nhu secured Vietnam the gold medal in the women's football final of SEA Games 31 against Thailand on Saturday, their third gold in a row.

Vietnam dominated the first half with many chances created like Nguyen Thi Van’s header or multiple shots by captain Huynh Nhu, but they were all denied by Thailand goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing.

Thailand got two dangerous shots but they also couldn’t get past Vietnam keeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh.

In the second half, Thailand tried to push forward in search for a goal, while Vietnam kept their composure and waited for the right time to counter.

In the 59th minute, Duong Thi Van won the ball back in the midfield and made an excellent through ball for captain Huynh Nhu as she dribbled past keeper Booning and finished cleanly to make it 1-0 for Vietnam.

After scoring, Vietnam tried to keep the pressure on but Thailand were hungry for the equalizer and pressed back. They got two dangerous freekicks but couldn’t beat keeper Kim Thanh.

Vietnam almost scored the second goal but Tran Thi Thuy Trang’s tap-in hit the post.

The score remained 1-0 until the end and Vietnam brought the gold medal home.

They accomplished the goal set by coach Mai Duc Chung, that was a SEA Games gold hat trick.
