Vietnam climbed to the top spot of Group B with their second victory straight at the AFF Cup, against Malaysia, thanks to goals by Nguyen Tien Linh, Que Ngoc Hai and Nguyen Hoang Duc.

Vietnam moved one step closer to the semifinals after a 3-0 win against their main competitor in group B.

After the first slow 20 minutes, Vietnam started putting it together and put more pressure on Malaysia.

Eight minutes later, from a corner taken by captain Do Hung Dung, striker Nguyen Tien Linh got a header that was too difficult for Malaysia goalie Syihan Hazmi and opened the scoring.

The joy didn’t last for long as five minutes later, Vietnam were down to 10 men after Nguyen Van Toan’s second yellow card.

From this moment, Malaysia had more room to attack and Vietnam held on to the lead until halftime.

In the second half, despite playing with 10 men, Vietnam still decided to play attacking football instead of defensive like they did in the first half. Phan Van Duc almost scored if it wasn’t for keeper Hazmi.

In the 60th minute when Azam Azmi had an ugly play with Doan Van Hau and the referee noticed it. He sent Azmi off and gave Vietnam a penalty.

From the spot, Que Ngoc Hai calmly put it to the right corner and doubled the lead for Vietnam.

Malaysia tried to make a comeback but Vietnam’s defense and keeper Dang Van Lam denied their efforts.

In the 83rd minute, the substitution Nguyen Quang Hai showed his class with a through pass to Nguyen Hoang Duc, who had an elegant finish and sealed the 3-0 victory.

Vietnam will play their next game against Singapore on Friday.
