Playing a key role in the development of transportation infrastructure and tourism, and in preparation for the 2027 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Phu Quoc International Airport is set to undergo a comprehensive upgrade, positioning it among the most advanced and intelligent airports in the region.
The image above illustrates the passenger terminal's design, inspired by phoenix wings symbolizing dynamic growth.
According to the development plan, the airport will span over 1,050 hectares and meet the 4E standard established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), allowing it to serve wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 787, and Airbus A350.
By the time of the 2027 APEC summit, Phu Quoc International Airport is expected to handle 18 million passengers annually—4.5 times its current capacity—which will significantly contribute to tourism and economic growth in Phu Quoc. The airport's annual capacity is projected to expand further, reaching 50 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo by 2050.
The new passenger terminal will be constructed to international standards and include dedicated international and domestic terminals, a shopping center, and an exhibition area.
Designed by Singapore-based CPG Consultants, the project is led by architect Steven Thor, the company's executive vice president. Thor has over 30 years of experience in architectural design, with notable projects such as Hangzhou International Airport Terminal 2 and the East Shenzhen Airport Integrated Transport Center in China.
A key highlight of the airport is its integration of advanced operational technologies, similar to those at the world's leading airports such as Changi in Singapore, Haneda in Japan, and Beijing in China.
Passengers will enjoy convenient features including remote check-in, automated luggage sorting, and biometric recognition, reducing check-in times to just 15–30 seconds.
Additionally, personalized passenger services and intelligent traffic management systems will be implemented to further enhance efficiency and customer experience.
In addition to the T2 passenger terminal, Phu Quoc International Airport will construct a VIP terminal to welcome heads of state and high-ranking delegates attending the APEC summit.
The VIP terminal, designed by Italian architect Marco Casamonti, who also created Phu Quoc's iconic "Kiss Bridge" on the island's southern coast, is inspired by the image of a sea eagle, symbolizing freedom, flexibility, and harmony with nature. The "Kiss Bridge" itself has become a popular attraction among global travelers and is expected to further elevate the island’s international profile.
Under the development plan, Phu Quoc Airport will feature two runways: the existing runway will be extended to 3,500 meters, and a new 3,300-meter runway will be constructed. Additionally, aircraft parking capacity will expand, accommodating over 100 parking positions, including 45 spaces dedicated to wide-body aircraft.
The VIP terminal will be designed to accommodate up to 300 people at a time from flights carrying heads of state and their entourages.

Phu Quoc International Airport is currently classified as a 4E airport, featuring a passenger terminal with a capacity of 4 million passengers per year, a 3,000-meter by 45-meter runway, and 14 aircraft parking positions. It also includes a cargo terminal with an annual capacity of 14,500 tons.
In 2023, the airport served over 4.1 million passengers, exceeding its designed capacity, with 2.3 million domestic and 1.8 million international travelers.
