China's Beijing Daxing International Airport, home to the world's largest airport terminal, ranked 97th in Skytrax's list of the world's 100 best airports this year, up 28 places from last year.

The ranking by Skytrax, a British airline and airport review site, was based on passenger satisfaction surveys covering categories such as check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security, immigration, and departure procedures.

Located about 45 kilometers from downtown Beijing, the airport boasts a 700,000-square-meter terminal and four runways. It could handle 72 million passengers annually by 2025.

By 2040, the airport plans to expand to eight runways and accommodate up to 100 million passengers a year.

Shaped like a phoenix, though to some observers it is more reminiscent of a starfish, the airport was designed by famed Iraqi-born architect Zaha Hadid, according to Reuters.

Changi Airport in Singapore was named the world's best airport this year, followed by Hamad International Airport in Qatar, Tokyo International Airport in Japan, and Incheon International Airport in South Korea.
