Trees on the median trip of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard in Thu Duc City have had their branches and leaves trimmed.
The Ho Chi Minh City Greenery Parks Co. Ltd said Wednesday that 1,081 trees on the sidewalks and median strip along the boulevard will be removed by the end of this month to provide space for the building of the An Phu Intersection.
A worker chops branches off a tree on Mai Chi Tho Boulevard. Most of trees being trimmed are aged from 13 to 20 years.
After digging up a tree, workers place its roots along with soil in a sack for removal.
On average, a group of six workers can dig up 30 trees a day.
Most of the uprooted trees will be brought to a public garden before being planted elsewhere in the city. More than 200 trees that are too sick to be kept will be chopped down.
According to the authorities, once the intersection project is completed, the trees will be re-planted again.
Workers take a break.
With a price tag of more than VND3.4 trillion ($144 million), the project to upgrade An Phu Intersection in Thu Duc City will build two overpasses and a tunnel linking the HCMC–Long Thanh–Dau Giay Expressway with Mai Chi Tho Boulevard.
The expressway connects HCMC with the industrial hub of Dong Nai and is also the main route to travel from the city to Ba Ria – Vung Tau, which is home to major southern port complexes and Vung Tau beach town.
