HCMC has called on the Ministry of Transport to approve construction of overpasses and a tunnel to decongest the entry to a highway that runs to Dong Nai Province.

In a letter it wrote to the ministry Thursday, the city said it has "basically completed the pre-feasibility study" for a VND3.93-trillion (US$176.8-million) project to upgrade the An Phu Intersection in Thu Duc City, and needs the ministry's comments at the earliest to continue with the work.

For years traffic jams have plagued the intersection of Mai Chi Tho Street and the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway in Thu Duc, a major link to the under-construction Long Thanh Airport in neighboring Dong Nai.

The city plans to build a tunnel and two overpasses.

The ministry is set to widen the expressway from the current four to eight or 10 lanes.
