Times Square building near Ben Thanh Market in District 1 is operated by Times Square, a company owned by her husband Eric Chu, a property tycoon in Hong Kong.

The 39-story building has offices, a hotel, premium apartments, and a mall.

Chu signed off on documents in 2012 and 2017 to pledge the building as collateral for 73 loans Lan and her accomplices took from Saigon Commercial Bank, causing it losses of VND9.12 trillion ($204 million).

A stone’s throw away is the VTP Office Service Center built by Van Thinh Phat in 1993. It has 15 floors with offices for rent.

On the opposite is 19-25 Nguyen Hue, a building she leased to SCB to house its headquarters.

Lan sought the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City’s permission to exclude this property from the list of assets to be handed over to the bank, saying it was a gift from her mother to her daughter.

Lan said SCB has not paid rent for over a year or returned the building.

Another building owned by Van Thinh Phat nearby is Union Square, built on one of the most expensive land lots in the city, according to the property industry.

Built in 2014 with a total area of 9,000 square meters, it houses a mall and a five-star hotel, and has nine floors, five of them occupied by the hotel, and six basements.

Along the Saigon River is the unfinished Saigon One Tower owned by Viva Land, a subsidiary of Van Thinh Phat.

At 185 meters it is the third tallest building in the city, and will have 42 floors and five basements. It was designed as a complex of offices, apartments and a mall.

Construction began in 2009 but ceased in 2011, and since then nothing has happened.

Glass and lighting have been installed on the facade, giving it an impressive look.

A building at 193-203 Tran Hung Dao on a 2,000-square-meter plot of land was the former headquarters of Van Thinh Phat and SCB, but is now unoccupied.

Sherwood Residence in District 3 used to be where Lan lived. The five-star hotel and apartment complex has 21 floors and three basements.

Lan admitted in court that her personal driver delivered VND108 trillion and $14.7 million in cash from SCB to this location. She used the money to pay debts, buy shares and for other personal purposes.

On Dong Khoi Street, one of the most expensive leasing locations globally in 2023, Van Thinh Phat owns two buildings at door numbers 143 and 151.

Also in District 3 is an old villa Lan bought for VND700 billion. It was hidden away behind temporary barricades for restoration, but the work stopped when Lan was arrested.

Lan has requested that this property be excluded from the list of assets to be taken over by SCB for her daughter to restore it as a Vietnamese relic.

Van Thinh Phat owns the Windsor Plaza Hotel in District 5. The 25-story building was the first private hotel in Vietnam to get five stars. It hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in 2006.

It is connected to the An Dong Plaza Mall, which is also owned by Van Thinh Phat. It has 1,400 stalls on four floors.

The 118-hectare Saigon Peninsula was earmarked to be a $6-billion luxury residence and commercial complex, but legal problems meant Van Thinh Phat and some foreign partners could not develop it.

It was used by Lan as collateral for loans worth VND133.7 trillion given to 100 of her associates. It has now been attached.

At the ongoing trial prosecutors have recommended the death sentence for Lan for committing severe crimes over a long period and causing irrevocable consequences.

From 2012 to 2022 Lan and her accomplices obtained 2,500 loans worth more than VND1 quadrillion ($44 billion), accounting for 93% of the bank’s total lending during the period.

She is accused of causing it losses of VND498 trillion.
