The prosecutors have proposed a death sentence for Van Thinh Phat chairwoman Truong My Lan for committing severe crime over a long period and causing irrevocable consequences.

The prosecutors said that Lan committed severe crimes repeatedly over a long period, with sophisticated methods and in an organized manner. She was insincere during the trial and blamed her subordinates.

They recommended 19-20 years for bribery, 19-20 years for violating banking regulations, and death for embezzlement. The combined sentence recommended for her is death.

Several former leaders of Saigon Commercial Bank, including chairmen Dinh Van Thanh and Bui Anh Dung and CEO Vo Tan Hoang Van are recommended life prison.

The prosecutors said that they had actively helped Lan to steal a large amount of money. Although they showed repentance at the court and had compensated part of the losses, but they too committed crimes over a long period and caused severe consequences.

The prosecutors therefore recommended them life prison for embezzlement and violating banking regulations.

Prosecutors have recommended life prison for Do Thi Nhan, former chief bank inspector at the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), for receiving $5.2 million in bribes. Nhan had submitted all the money to the police during the investigation.

They proposed 14-15 years sentence for Nguyen Van Hung, deputy chief inspector of the SBV, for ordering the inspection team to hide the wrongdoings at SCB and for receiving bribes. He had submitted to the police the $390,000 he received from the bank leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, Lan's group has more than 2,500 loans at SCB with a total disbursement of more than VND1 quadrillion ($44 billion), which accounts for 93% of the total credit that the bank has issued.

She is accused of causing a loss of VND498 trillion to the bank after the value of collaterals has been deducted.
