Water in the Red River reached the highest levels over the last 16 years, forcing Hanoians to evacuate starting Monday night.

Water levels in the Red River continued to rise at 11 a.m. The water flooded the floodplain, threatening residential areas in downtown Hoan Kiem District's Chuong Duong Ward.

Water levels in the Red River were at 9.5 m on Tuesday morning, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Within the next 24 hours, water levels could rise to 10.5 m.

The water has flooded an area from Alley 114 Ham Tu Quan to the Chuong Duong Do dock, submerging parking lots and playgrounds. 46 families in the area have been evacuated, and barricades have been erected.

Nguyen Hong Diep, vice chairwoman of the Yen Phu Ward People's Committee, said rising waters in the river had isolated neighborhoods, and most people had been evacuated to safety.

"My house, my belongings, my crops have all been flooded. I have 12 dogs, yet I only managed to save five, while I put the rest on the roof. I hope the water would stop rising," said Phan Thi Tuyet (pictured).

Early Tuesday morning, several families in Alley 176 Nghi Tam in Tay Ho District had to be evacuated as water levels reached as high as a person's waist.

Hanoi suffers heavy damage from typhoon Yagi, with three people killed and 10 injured from Sept. 6 to 8. Several vehicles and houses, as well as thoudands of trees were damaged.

The typhoon also triggered floods and landslides in many northern Vietnam localities, including Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Cao Bang and Quang Ninh.

By Tuesday afternoon, at least 87 people had been killed due to floods and landslides and 70 others remained missing.
