Yagi, the most powerful typhoon to hit Vietnam in 30 years, has wreaked havoc across northern cities and provinces, destroying homes, infrastructure, and triggering widespread flooding and landslides. The devastation is continuing, with no end in sight.

As of Tuesday, typhoon Yagi has claimed at least 127 lives, left 54 others missing, and injured approximately 250 people. Tens of thousands of homes in provinces like Yen Bai, Thai Nguyen, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, and Bac Giang are submerged under 0.5 to 1.5 meters of water. Over 1,100 fish farms have been washed away, numerous boats and ships have sunk, and the damage continues to escalate.
Flooding along the Red River has caused the collapse of Phong Chau Bridge in Phu Tho Province. Continuous landslides have plagued Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, and Lao Cai, with Lao Cai declaring a state of emergency.
In the aftermath of typhoon Yagi, many schools remain closed, unable to reopen due to severe damage. Roofs have been torn off, walls have collapsed, and flooding has destroyed teaching equipment. In Quang Ninh Province, nearly 400 classrooms have their windows broken, and 110 classrooms have suffered ceiling collapses. In Hai Phong, 303 school buildings have been affected. In districts like Mu Cang Chai and Luc Yen in Yen Bai Province, schools face landslides, damaged embankments, and floors that have sunk or are at risk of collapsing.

On Sept. 9, Party General Secretary and President To Lam expressed deep sympathy to those affected by typhoon Yagi. He urged businesses, philanthropists, and citizens both at home and abroad to come together in solidarity. He called for timely and direct support for those who have lost property or loved ones, emphasizing the importance of everyone contributing according to their ability and responsibility.
