Durians have several benefits to health. They contain an amino acid called tryptophan which helps produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that makes humans feel happy, calm and relaxed.
Durians also have a high amount of potassium and are beneficial for blood circulation, so it is a good choice for people who have high blood pressure levels.
In addition, durians have beneficial antioxidants and phytochemicals, for instance, carotenoid, anthocyanin, polyphenol and flavonoid, which possess the ability to reduce cholesterol, prevent atherosclerosis and reduce the risk of heart-related diseases.

100 grams of durian provide eaters 24% of the daily amount of vitamin C, which enhances the immune system and improves leukocyte activities. Vitamin C also helps produce more collagen, which is beneficial for the skin, hair, and nails.
However, the fruit is rich in nutrients as well, and 100 grams of durian contain 147 calories. Hence, a durian pulp, which is 250 grams on average, provides around 367 calories.
Because of this, a person of normal conditions should not have more than four durian pulps a day. A consumption higher than this amount may cause bloating, constipation, or dyspepsia.
People with diabetes should only have one to two durian pulps at a time. People with kidney failure, or who are using artificial kidneys, should also not eat durian.
It is also advised not to have durian with wine, as the combination may lead to headaches, nausea, vomiting, and other undesirable effects.
