To lose weight, Phung Manh Hung drank smoothies and juices to make himself feel less hungry and better control the amount of calories he took in each day.

Phung Manh Hung, 26, used to weigh 137 kg thanks to his bad habit of eating late night snacks, fried food, and taking in a constant stream of sweet sodas. There were days when he ate between one and two kg of meat or drank only soft drinks instead of water.

Hung suffered from a loss of confidence and many ill effects on his health and career because of his obesity.

"I struggled with severe depression and health risks in 2014, after failing to land a job because of my weight over a long time," Hung said.

According to the young man, he had to sleep sitting because he was unable to sleep lying down horizontally. He couldn’t do physically demanding tasks, snored while sleeping, had hyperlipidemia, and suffered pain throughout most of his body.

Not only that, he also suffered a constant feeling of hunger.

"I thought about taking my own life sometimes," Hung confessed.

One day he woke up and decided to change for the better. He started to strictly calculate and control the amount of calories he took in his body throughout the day. He applied the so-called intermittent fasting method by not consuming any food for 16 hours a day, aiming to force his body to burn fat.

He changed his diet plans by adding vegetables and low-sugar fruits, which helped his body feel full longer and, thus, eat less. He started researching detox smoothies that could provide his body with additional vitamins and minerals, boost his metabolism, improve his skin and hair conditions. He took up the habit of drinking water, and cut out unhealthy fried foods and cokes from his daily meals.

He also started boxing to burn excessive fat, help his body to absorb nutrition faster, and become more active.

Hung said he thought about giving up sometimes when he first changed his lifestyle.

"I struggled, thought about giving up, got insomnia and tired easily at the beginning," he admitted. "I had to deal with depression while trying my best not to take medications as well."

He lost 57 kg to reach 80 kg after just over a year of maintaining his healthy habits.

His health has significantly improved, and he started experiencing symptoms of his previous diseases less frequently. He can even play sports now.

He has also regained his confidence and found a new field of interest in researching nutrition and health.

He still keeps his healthy habits and tries his best to spread positive messages about healthy lifestyles to whoever may want to know.
