Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air have announced plans to launch new direct services from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to major Australian cities this month to meet demand.

On Sunday Vietnam Airlines said a Hanoi-Melbourne service would begin on June 15 with two weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays.

Budget airline Vietjet announced the start of direct flights between HCMC and Brisbane, Australia's third largest city, on June 16.

It will also be a twice-weekly service using wide-bodied A330 aircraft.

"We welcome new routes to Australia, especially Vietjet's route, the first route connecting Vietnam and Brisbane, the beautiful city of Australia that will host the 2032 Summer Olympics," Australian Prime Minister Albanese said Sunday during a two-day visit to Vietnam.

Almost 82,000 Australians visited Vietnam in the first quarter of 2023, up 14.4% compared to 2019, the year before Covid began, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
