Vietnam is one of five leading destinations New Zealanders want to visit in the next 12 months, a survey by adventure tour operator Intrepid Travel found.

A total 85 percent of New Zealanders are planning to travel within the next year despite soaring living costs, according to the survey of over 1,000 people carried out last August.

Besides Vietnam, the other most popular destinations were New Zealand, Australia, Turkey and Morocco.

"We are also seeing Kiwis start to plan for the future with international travel as well. We're starting to see some of those key destinations come back again, like Vietnam, which is a really popular one for intrepid travel with Kiwis," said the company's managing director Sarah Clarke, cited by The New Zealand Herald.

The Vietnamese government has allowed quarantine-free entry for foreign visitors since March.

It also offers 30-day e-visas for citizens from 80 countries and territories, including New Zealand.

So far this year the country has received 1.44 million foreign tourists and has a full-year target of five million.
