Budget airline Vietjet said Friday it would open a direct route connecting Hanoi with Hiroshima from July 19 to boost investment and tourism between Vietnam and Japan.

There would be two weekly flights on Wednesday and Sunday, the airline announced at a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh who is in Japan for the expanded summit of the Group of Seven (G7).

Addressing the ceremony, Masahiko Tanabe, deputy governor of Hiroshima prefecture, said the new air route is expected to speed up cooperation between Hiroshima and Vietnam in various fields, including investment, commerce and tourism.

With the new route, Vietjet has increased the number of round-trip flights between the two countries to 58 per week.

The carrier plans to serve more than 1.5 million seats between Vietnam and Japan this year.

Last year Vietnam welcomed over 128,000 Japanese tourists, around 10% of pre-pandemic levels.

Japan attracted more than 284,000 Vietnamese tourists last year, accounting for 7.4% of its total international visitors.
