Ronaldo spent nine years in La Liga, scoring a record 450 goals in 438 appearances for Real Madrid before leaving in 2018. Nearly seven years later, the 40-year-old striker is reportedly eyeing a return to Spain, this time as the owner of Valencia.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Ronaldo's close relationship with Valencia’s current owner, Singaporean billionaire Peter Lim, has fueled these rumors.
Ronaldo could secure financial backing from the Saudi Arabian royal family, especially from Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) or the country’s public investment fund. However, the deal will depend on Valencia avoiding relegation this season. The club currently sit 15th in La Liga with 34 points, seven points clear of relegation, with eight games left to play.
Since joining Al Nassr for a record-breaking $200 million salary at the end of 2022, Ronaldo has become the face of Saudi Arabian sports, regularly attending major boxing and UFC events. His close ties with MBS and immense global influence have turned him into a new icon of Saudi sports.
However, Lim has told Singaporean media last month that he has no intention of selling Valencia.
In 2023, Forbes valued Valencia at $217 million, factoring in matchday revenue, broadcasting rights, commercial activities, brand value, operating income, debt and stadium liabilities.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo earned $260 million in 2024 alone, with $200 million from his Al Nassr salary and $60 million from endorsements, including high-profile advertising on his Instagram, which boasts over 650 million followers.
Ronaldo wouldn’t necessarily have to wait for retirement to own the club. La Liga and FIFA regulations don’t prevent active players from owning clubs in other leagues. Since Al Nassr and Valencia would only meet in friendlies, in theory, Ronaldo could continue playing at the top level while owning the Spanish club.
In December 2024, Ronaldo confirmed that he has no interest in becoming a coach or club president after retirement, but he does aspire to own a major club.
