Police in Singapore have detained a 38-year-old woman for allegedly stealing luxury cosmetic products in a transit area of Changi Airport.

The woman was charged in court for theft and could face up to seven years in jail and a fine, Singapore Police Force said in a statement on Monday.

According to the police, they were alerted to a case of theft on Feb. 21 after a belt worth over S$800 (US$585) and cosmetic products amounting to more than S$170 were discovered missing from two retail outlets located in the transit area of the airport.

Based on security camera footage, police identified the theft was a female tourist but they had been unable to arrest her because she had left the city-state.

Earlier this month, the woman returned to Singapore and was quickly apprehended by police.

The name and nationality of the woman has not yet been revealed by police.

According to preliminary investigations, she had allegedly stolen cosmetic products amounting to more than S$400 on the same day of the arrest but did not give more details, The Straits Times reported.

Singapore's Changi Airport is ranked the fifth most luxurious airport by British travel insurance provider AllClear.

It is famous for its modern amenities and services, duty-free shopping, indoor rainforest and a waterfall.
