A Russian tourist was confirmed dead and his younger brother sustained injuries Saturday after their rented scooter crashed on a rural road in Thailand’s Phuket.

Maksim Fadeev was driving his younger brother on a scooter in Phuket’s Pa Khlok Town when his motorbike crashed, killing him at the spot, The Phuket News reported.

His brother survived the crash and was rushed to the Wachira Phuket Hospital for treatment.

The two had traveled to the Patong area to visit Bang Tao Beach. On the way back to their hotel, Fadeev might have failed to navigate a curve and fell off a nearby cliff to his death, police said.

Police said the Russian tourists might have been unfamiliar with the road.

A preliminary investigation found that the two brothers arrived in Phuket on April 5 and planned to leave on April 15. They had been staying at a hotel in Patong and had rented a Honda Click scooter for outings.

Local authorities are cooperating with the Russian Embassy in Thailand to return the victim to his family.
