Visitors in Malaga, one of Spain’s most popular destinations, will face fines of up to 750 euros (US$832) if caught going shirtless or wearing only underwear in public, under a new regulation effective from September.

The decision made by Malaga Local Council follows complaints from residents upset by foreigners walking around the city in bikinis or shorts, as reported by Euro News.

In addition to the dress code restrictions, city authorities are urging visitors to avoid disruptive behaviors such as causing disturbances, shouting, singing, or playing loud music.

Tourists are also encouraged to respect the daily routines of locals, particularly the elderly, children, students, essential workers, and patients, by keeping noise levels down during key hours, Daily Express reported.

Malaga, renowned for its beautiful beaches, vibrant culture, and culinary scene, welcomed around 14 million visitors by 2023. However, the surge in tourism has triggered discontent among residents, leading to protests against the effects of overtourism.

In response, the Malaga City Council has revised tourism regulations and launched a bilingual poster campaign, in English and Spanish, to remind visitors of acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
