Malaysian shopping mall The Mines, known for its Venetian-like internal water canal that flows through its ground level, was inundated with rainwater following a heavy thunderstorm last week.

Several videos that went viral on social media showed water rapidly pouring into the mall’s lower floors, with shoppers wading through ankle-to-knee-deep water, New Straits Times reported.

Tenants were seen moving merchandise away from storefronts as water continued streaming across the tiled walkways.

Initial observations from the videos suggest the flooding came from direct rainfall rather than overflow from the mall’s indoor canal, which runs through the center of the complex.

The inundation may have been triggered by intense surface runoff and an overwhelmed drainage system during the downpour, Malay Mail reported.

Located in Selangor, The Mines is a well-established shopping destination popular to tourists thanks to its blend of retail, dining, and leisure options.

It is also considered one of Malaysia's most distinctive malls thanks to its picturesque canal that flows through the middle of the complex.
